While coal was the main fuel source in the original, takes a different direction when your coal supplies start running low, forcing you to find a more permanent source of fuel: oil. You might think this is one of the nearby resource nodes surrounding New London, but after a quick scan, you'll see that's not the case. To find oil, you'll need to go a little further afield. Oil reserves run much more profoundly than coal, so they'll last longer than the shallow coal deposits in the New London landscape. They're a pretty consistent source of energy, especially if you've got the right upgrades for your Extraction Districts. Unless you speedrun your research, it's likely that you'll need oil before you can research too much. This means not only will you need to find one source of oil, but you'll also need to be able to extract enough to keep your people warm, and that will take some building research. To get started, build a Logistics Hub and explore Frostland.
To begin exploring a new fuel source in, you'll need to build a Logistics Hub in one of the three designated spots around New London.These are marked with a small compass icon and look like any one of the other resource nodes around the city.
