Resident Evil 1 Remake.
By the time it came out on Gamecube, I couldn't help shake the feeling of being nearly over the traditional RE Formula, with remake being the 5th entry in the series. The fixed camera angles were clearly hindering the game play by that point, along with the 6 second loading doors, archiac stiff tank controls and clunky cumbersome marionette puppet shooting bare bones gun play. It refused to get with the times.
On the flip side, It sure looked beautiful, the defence mechanic was a nice touch and crimson zombies definitely made the experience more intense and riddled the player with anxiety. Plus, I remember being ridiculously hyped for it months before it's release. But when i finally played it at launch, i couldn't help but feel incredibly underwhelmed. It was too dark and try-hard for it's own good. The Mansion was completely desaturateed, void of color and life, and basically consisted of puke greens, greys & browns that littered nearly every single room in that mansion. Rooms often failed at differentiating themselves from one another because of the limited dull color pallette .
And they completely ruined the build up and suspense leading up to Forest's dead body compared to the original. Barry wasn't as likeable either etc. I LOVED the PS1 Original, it was kind of revolutionary and felt very fresh back in 96, but the gamecube remake? It was always just OK in my eyes. A depressing over hyped instalment that doesn't hold a candle whatsoever to something like RE4 imo.
Zero was the nail in the coffin. That's when i was 100% over the traditional RE Formula. Not a terrible game by any means, yet it's still at the bottom of the RE barrel, with RE6 being the absolute worst.
