The Olympic Esports Games 2025 was supposed to be a massive moment for competitive gaming. I’m saying ‘was’ because it’s not happening in 2025 anymore. It’s still happening but not this year. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has decided to postpone the event.
Originally set to happen in Saudi Arabia later this year, the Olympic Esports Games has now been pushed to 2026-2027. The exact date is yet to be decided. Now comes the real question. Why did it get delayed?
Organizing an esports tournament on an Olympic scale is a massive task. The IOC and the International Esports Federation (IESF) need more time to get things in order.
According to reports, the delay comes down to several big challenges. First, there’s still no finalised list of games, no confirmed venues and no concrete dates.
Then, there’s the issue of figuring out a fair qualification system for players around the world. Also, apparently, the game publishers weren’t thrilled about the tight deadline.
So, going forward, the committees have a lot to figure out. From picking the right game titles and locking in venues to designing a qualification process that makes sense and securing the funding to make it all happen.
The Olympic Esports Games is supposed to give esports a proper stage alongside the biggest sporting events in the world. If the extra time means the event will be better organized, more polished and truly worthy of an Olympic-level esports competition, maybe it’s worth the wait.
Meanwhile, if you want to learn more about the event, you can find out more about it on the official website of the IOC.
