Teslas can do some pretty weird things. These Elon Musk-backed electric vehicles can autonomously drive, self-park, and go from zero to 60 mph in a matter of seconds. And, up until this week, they could also launch Steam.
The feature didn't necessarily work how one might think. For starters, you couldn't be in motion and also access Steam. That functionality was only reserved for when a Tesla was parked or charging. In other words, you couldn't start a session of Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut, which recently became Sony's biggest single-player launch on Steam, while cruising down the highway.
Still, it was a novel feature that made those fortunate enough to own a Tesla that much cooler. Now, it appears that, moving forward, that feature will cease to exist.
As first spotted on Reddit, and later shared by Electrek, Tesla owners are now being notified that their Model S and Model X vehicle will not ship with Steam on board.
It's part of a larger notification, but Tesla notes that it's updating the gaming computer, and thus no longer capable of playing Steam games. Check it out:
The feature, which launched in 2022, helped bring about Musk's vision for Tesla Arcade. Through it, Tesla owners could not only play their Steam games, but games specifically ported to Tesla, like Fallout Shelter.
Perhaps the most interesting part of the feature was the ability to actually use the steering wheel as a controller. And if that wasn't enough, owners could connect a controller via Bluetooth or USB.
While the feature is going away for future owners, who are awaiting delivery, it doesn't sound like current owners have much to fear. If you're somehow bummed about your Tesla not being a gaming machine, then you can take your gaming fantasies in a different direction by turning a Cybertruck into a Razorback from Halo. All you'll need is a cool $2,700 for the wrap and over $80,000 for the truck itself.
Unfortunately, I'm still waiting for Sweet Tooth's ice cream truck
