Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has come out on top in this week’s UK physical game charts.
Although the full chart has yet to be published, GamesIndustry.biz’s Christopher Dring tweeted some initial findings from this week’s results.
According to Dring, Spider-Man 2 “comfortably” took the number 1 slot in the UK, with Super Mario Bros Wonder in second place.
He also provides a number of caveats, most notably the fact that this only relates to physical game sales and digital sales data comes at a later date.
Spider-Man 2’s release was reportedly the fourth-biggest physical launch in the UK this year – The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, EA Sports FC 24 and Hogwarts Legacy all sold more physical copies in the UK in their first week.
Its physical sales are also 20% lower than those of God of War: Ragnarok, though again this doesn’t take digital sales into account.
As for Super Mario Bros Wonder, Dring notes that it’s the third-biggest physical launch for a Mario platform game in UK chart history.
“It is only very narrowly behind Super Mario Odyssey and Super Mario 3D All-Stars,” he notes, suggesting: “I imagine with digital, it may well be the biggest Mario platform game launch in the UK ever.”
Mario Wonder’s first-week physical UK sales were 62% lower than those of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, but Mario games tend to be more ‘evergreen’ and continue to sell in healthy numbers years after release.
According to Dring, Mario Wonder’s first week UK sales are “significantly better” than those of New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe, which to date has gone to sell more than 16 million copies worldwide.
