Footage of Shazam! Fury of the Gods was finally released at Comic-Con 2022, revealing that the sequel would continue one of the DCEU's weirdest Easter egg trends. The highly anticipated continuation of 2018's Shazam! still has a lot of mysteries to be solved, with the trailer raising more questions than it answered. However, the trailer for Shazam! Fury of the Gods did reveal one big cameo: the return of a horror icon.
Superhero movies are no strangers to Easter eggs, as the genre has been packed full of cameos and references since its inception. Often directors of superhero projects sneak in references to prior films, as can be seen in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy, James Gunn's Peacemaker, and many others. What happens less often, though, is several separate films in a cinematic universe referencing the same film, with the DCEU's strange cameo trend being one of the only examples of this.

Now counting Shazam 2, three different films in the DCEU have had a cameo from the Annabelle doll. The Conjuring's creepy doll made her first appearance in Shazam!, appearing on a store shelf. Just a few months later, Annabelle again appeared in Aquaman, who can this time be seen lying on the ocean floor. Most recently, the Shazam 2 trailer shows Annabelle among other toys in a pediatrician's office. With this being the third Annabelle cameo, the DCEU is clearly making a trend out of featuring the Conjuring's famous doll. While it seems odd at first, there is actually a really good reason for these frequent Easter eggs.
