The future of the DC Extended Universe has become a disaster, leaving audiences with some massive questions that Warner Bros. must now answer. It has never been smooth sailing for the DCEU. The shared universe's launch in 2013 with Man of Steel was meant to be the beginning of a five-movie plan from Zack Snyder. Those plans were rushed and expanded upon at Warner Bros.' request to give them a better chance of rivaling Disney and Marvel Studios' Marvel Cinematic Universe. No matter what new directions the DCEU has gone in since then, WB can not stop creating problems or becoming stuck in another controversy.
2022 is a perfect example of the type of rollercoaster ride following the DCEU can be. The year saw Matt Reeves' The Batman debut in theaters and become a huge hit, solidifying Robert Pattinson as an excellent new Batman who does not exist in the main universe. James Gunn also surprised everyone with his exploration of John Cena's Peacemaker on HBO Max, which included surprise cameos from the Justice League. However, The Flash has been marred in controversy thanks to Ezra Miller and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom was caught in the Amber Heard/Johnny Depp trial storm. Many were also left disappointed by the lack of DCEU announcements (and a Henry Cavill appearance) at San Diego Comic-Con, which was then followed by the shocking cancellation of Batgirl, a $90 million origin movie that was nearly done.
