Director James Gunn, while discussing the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, revealed that the film would be bigger and longer than its two predecessors. Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy hit audiences by storm when it debuted in August 2014, resulting in huge box office numbers and newfound appreciation for little known Marvel characters such as Star-Lord, Groot, and Rocket Raccoon. The GOTG franchise has been one of the MCU's most successful to this point, with an even bigger debut for 2017's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and big moments for the Guardians crew inAvengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame and the recent Thor: Love & Thunder.
Part of what has made the GOTG films so enduring and important has been Gunn's emphasis on character development and emotional themes. The previous Guardians of the Galaxy films have seen Chris Pratt's Star-Lord deal with his mother's death due to cancer, his father figure's passing, and the reveal of his real father, Kurt Russell's Ego, being a genocidal warlord who gave Quill's mother the cancer. The emotional themes have spread to fleshing out Gamora's relationship with her sister Nebula, Drax's grief at losing his daughter to Thanos, and Rocket's traumatic history as a lab animal. And with the third and final GOTG film less than a year away from release, a similar wave of emotions to end the trilogy is expected.
