James Gunn updates fans on the status of Peacemaker season 2 after the surprise cancellation of Batgirl. The movie industry was rocked on Tuesday when Warner Bros. Discovery shockingly announced the decision to shelve the nearly-finished $90 million superhero movie Batgirl. The film starring Leslie Grace as Barbara Gordon had been set for an HBO Max release later in 2022.
It is of course not unprecedented for a movie like Batgirl to do poorly with test audiences and undergo massive reworking before release. It is however almost unheard of for a major studio to completely shelve a finished film, especially a franchise film, in response to bad test screenings. But test responses to Batgirl were reportedly unusually negative, with audiences calling the film “disappointing” and “cheap-looking.” For their part, Warner Bros. Discovery says the movie’s cancellation was part of a «strategic shift» that reportedly includes a cost-cutting push and a refocus on big theatrical features.

DC fans hearing about the reasoning behind the cancellation of Batgirl quite naturally began wondering about the status of other planned movies and TV shows in the DCEU. In particular, fans became concerned about Peacemaker season 2 in light of reports that WBD means to cut costs and shift focus away from HBO Max to the theatrical side. But fans can stop worrying according to Peacemaker creator Gunn, who took to Twitter to quiet fears that the show might be canceled. “Yes, guys, calm down,” Gunn said in response to fans worrying out loud about Peacemaker. The exchange can be seen in the space below:
Yes, guys, calm down.
