In wake of Batgirl's cancelation, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has sent an email to directors Adil El Arbi and Billal Fallah, showing his support. After iterating through several creative changes for years, Batgirl was finally on the right track, with up-and-coming directors El Arbi and Fallah helming the movie off a screenplay by Birds of Prey writer Christina Hudson. Leslie Grace led Batgirl as Barbara Gordon, with Michael Keaton and J.K. Simmons attached to reprise their roles as Bruce Wayne/Batman and Commissioner Jim Gordon, respectively. Filming on the movie had wrapped up by March, and until earlier this month, the film was in post-production. But then, Warner Bros. (WB) took fans and industry figures by shock when it announced that Batgirl has been shelved, with no plans to release it theatrically or on HBO Max.
Unsurprisingly, the decision spurred a massive backlash, with fans quickly launching social media campaigns to save the movie. Later, WB offered an official statement, emphasizing that the film was canceled because the newly-minted Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) has course-corrected its streaming release strategy. WBD CEO David Zaslav also defended Batgirl's cancelation, asserting that the studio would only focus on theatrical moviemaking moving forward. Meanwhile, speculation circulated that Batgirl was partly canceled because its initial screenings tested poorly. But while those reports were ultimately refuted, they did add insult to injury aggravating the directors' plight. El Arbi and Fallah recently responded to WBD's decision by mentioning that they deserve to have their work shown, and there has since been an outpour of support for the filmmakers.
