Roblox has changed its Marketplace policy, opening up the ability to create and sell custom avatar items to a wider range of users.
Since 2019, users who want to create and sell their own avatar items on the platform’s Marketplace have had to apply to join the UGC (user-generated content) Program.
Only once Roblox accepts their application – which can take numerous weeks for a response and isn’t always guaranteed – are they then allowed to create avatar items and sell them on the Marketplace.
Roblox has now scrapped this process, however, and replaced it with a clear set of eligibility requirements designed to let more users create and sell items.
Users can now upload, publish and sell in the Marketplace, as long as they:
The policy guidelines are designed to ensure the Marketplace isn’t filled with controversial or IP-infringing items.
They require users to only upload items they have permission to sell, and to avoid creating “items that are political, religious, gory, violent, self-harm-related, drug-related, sexual/wedding/dating-related, or items that are likely to be used for these types of roleplay”.
“Today, we’re making it easier for anyone to create in Marketplace”, Roblox vice president of economy Enrico D’Angelo said in a statement.
“This will be a powerful step forward for creators and brands to market a diverse collection of avatars, clothing and accessories, and to connect with their audience.”
Earlier this month, the head of Roblox Studio rejected accusations that the platform could be considered exploitative when children use it to make money.
Roblox’s ID verification – which is required to let users upload and sell items in the Marketplace – states that users must be at least 13 years of age.
