While Resident Evil 4 may be pretty fantastic, I think most fans will agree that having to escort Ashley around was one of the worst parts of the game. Not only does she get kidnapped a bunch and need help climbing down ladders, but she also doesn't do much to ensure her own survival when not given direct orders, often standing amongst a horde of enemies just waiting for them to grab her.
The developers behind Resident Evil 4 Remake know these particular sections of the game aren't well-liked by fans, and are doing their best to ensure Ashley can pull her own weight. In an interview in the latest issue of PlayMagazine (thanks GamesRadar), producer Yokiashi Hirobayashi has explained that Capcom has tried to make escorting Ashley "more appealing" this time around, and that she'll be a much more "convincing standalone character".

"While there are elements of moving through the game as a pair which differ from how you manage just controlling Leon, and introduce a different kind of challenge, I think we have made it so that by having Ashley be a more convincing standalone character," explains Hirobayashi. "Players will come to enjoy these sections."
In fact, we already know that Ashley will do a lot more in Resident Evil 4 Remake to avoid being captured. In some preview footage recently sent to PC GamesN, it's claimed that Ashley tries to find cover whenever Leon orders her to "give me some space", and that she'll even respond and talk to Leon more naturally during fighting sequences.
