Some Resident Evil 4 Remake players on PC are losing all of their progress, as save files are corrupting on Steam. Fans are suggesting ways to fix the issue, but officially, the game will tell you to start all the way from the beginning again.
The issue is even affecting Steam cloud saves, meaning that the only way you might be able to avoid this is by backing up your saves manually. However, if the corruption makes its way into your saves, there's a lengthy process you'll have to go through before you can start playing again, or you'll lose this progress too.

The bug was highlighted on Steam by user King of Persia. As outlined in the post, when they went to play the game they were instead greeted with the message: "Unable to load system saved data. Delete all game saved data and restart the game. Restarting without deleting data will result in unloadable save data."
ResetEra user Dreamboum has documented the save corruption too, being met with the same warning.
King of Persia has since shared a fix that may get your save files back, and it seems to be working for other players. However, you will still lose your Challenge Points, so you'll have to replay the game to earn these back.
A common theme here is that affected players believe they may have restarted/switched off the game while it was saving or backing up saves. So to avoid the issue, just be extra careful before you exit the game. Thankfully, it seems that the vast majority of players aren't losing their save data, since the reviews for the game on Steam are still overwhelmingly positive.
This is similar to another issue players were facing with Resident Evil 4 Remake on PC.
