Actor Rainn Wilson starred on one of the most popular TV shows this millennium when he played Dwight Schrute on The Office. He made tons of money and became very famous. But the actor says he always wanted more and more and more.
Speaking to Bill Maher for his Club Random podcast (via Variety), Wilson said he was unhappy for «several» years during the production of The Office. In part, this was because Wilson wanted to go on to bigger things. Wilson said he was making «hundreds of thousands» of dollars starring on The Office, but he wanted millions and he also wanted to become a movie star.
«When I was in The Office, I spent several years really mostly unhappy because it wasn't enough,” he said. 'I'm realizing now, like, I'm on a hit show, Emmy nominated every year, making lots of money, working with Steve Carell and Jenna Fisher and John Krasinski and these amazing writers and incredible directors like Paul Feig.
»I'm on one of the great TV shows. People love it. I wasn't enjoying it. I was thinking about, 'Why am I not a movie star? Why am I not the next Jack Black or the next Will Ferrell?" he added. «How come I can't have a movie career? Why don't I have this development deal?'»
Wilson played Schrute on The Office for its entire run from 2005 — 2013. Wilson appeared in plenty of movies during and after The Office, but co-stars Steve Carrell and John Krasinski had arguably bigger success as leading men in a number of films and TV series.
The Office is an adaptation of the British TV series of the same name created by Ricky Gervais. Amid rumors of another American remake, Gervais has announced The Office Australia with a COVID twist.
