The Nintendo Switch has now entered the seventh year of its life, so it’s no surprise that the perennially best-selling console has seen a bit of a slowdown in its sales in several regions around the world- which, of course, is expected to continue going forward. However, the month of May was a big one for the Switch.
As per Gfk data (shared by GamesIndustry’s Christopher Dring on Twitter), the Nintendo Switch was the best-selling console in the UK in May, outselling the PS5. That’s the first time this year that Sony’s console hasn’t ended a month as the region’s highest selling console, and it’s no coincidence that it aligns with the launch of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom halfway through the month.
The Switch’s year-to-date dales in the UK are currently only 8% down from what the system managed in the same time last year, though with not many more big releases lined up for the ageing platform over the coming months, it’s likely that the numbers will continue to dip.
PS5’s four-month reign as the UK’s No.1 console ended in May, with Switch at No.1. Nintendo’s console is only down 8% over what it did during the first 5 months of last year. But obviously the Switch release schedule is looking a bit light for the rest of the year (GfK data)
