Sony has revealed the long-rumoured PlayStation 5 redesign, shrinking the console by around 30%, making the UHD Blu-ray drive an optional add-on – so you can buy the digital edition and upgrade it to a disc model – and boosting the built-in SSD storage to 1TB.
The new look PS5 will be released in November for the US and Canada, with a global roll-out over the following months. When launched, the RRP will in line with the current consoles, as follows:
A UHD Blu-ray disc drive can be added to the Digital Edition for 79.99 USD | 119.99 EURO | 99.99 GBP | 11,980 JPY.
It should also be noted that while this new PS5 slim includes a horizontal stand, it is no longer a multi-purpose design. A vertical stand will be sold separately for 29.99 USD | 29.99 EURO | 24.99 GBP | 3,980 JPY.
This PS5 redesign still has a lot in common with the original PS5, with the two-tone design and popped collar look, but the cover panels are now split into four panels, with the top portion being glossy and the bottom being matte. Sony has been able to shrink down the console’s overall volume by more than 30%, and the weight down by 18% and 24% compared to previous models, likely from reducing the size of the heat sink needed for the console cooling.
There’s other tweaks and changes to the console as well. In terms of USB ports, both of the front ports are now USB-C, though only one has the 10Gbps speeds, while the two rear USB ports remain USB-A. The built-in SSD has been expanded from 825GB to 1TB, which should give around an extra 150GB of user storage. It’s still the same speed as before, but Sony can likely now source chips from more vendors thanks to this.
