Warner Bros. has announced that their platform fighter MultiVersus will be getting its re-launch and full release on 28th may. The free-to-play brawler will be out across PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, Xbox One and PC.
With this new launch, MultiVersus will have a new PvE mode for co-op battling, there will be more heroes and personalities on the roster, and more stages that have taken inspiration from further reimagined universes.
MultiVersus was a super smash hit when its open beta debuted in the summer of 2022, finally giving us a real alternative to Super Smash Bros. on Nintendo’s consoles, and doing so across PlayStation, Xbox and PC. On the whole it was enjoyed by the players that dived in, though there were some niggling issues with certain gameplay and online play elements that developer Player First Games rushed to try and address.
At the same time, they were busy trying to churn out new content and additional characters for the game, with a first season of the live service landing not far behind the open beta launch.
However, that content treadmill slowed through the end of the year, and by early 2023, Player First Games and Warner Bros. took the decision to not just pause public development, but to actually remove the game from online stores and switch off the servers. At the time, they promised a relaunch in 2024, and the team has been able to conjure that up. If you played and unlocked things last through the open beta, then they also promised that your progress and purchases would not be lost, so we expect that you’ll be able to play as DLC characters if you bought them before.
Let’s take a quick look back at that original open beta release. In our hands on impressions from MultiVersus, Jim said, “this is shaping up to be a Smash alternative with real stopping power thanks to an instantly recognisable cast and modern design sensibilities you wouldn’t expect from Nintendo’s fighting game franchise.”
