We’re less than two weeks from the official preview of the upcoming Magic: The Gathering set, Streets of New Capenna, but that hasn’t stopped head designer Mark Rosewater from hosting his own early-access teaser.
Rosewater posted to his personal blog to hint at what’s coming in Streets of New Capenna without actually revealing any cards, but what he did reveal was certainly intriguing.

To start, there will be “five mana costs, using existing mana symbols, that we’ve never used before." On top of that comes "a mechanic we’ve tried to get in numerous sets finally finds a home," along with "a creature type theme for a draft archetype that’s never been used before."
Those could mean almost anything, but a few teasers were somewhat more concrete. Such as a black spell that costs "13BB", and a card that adds "WWUUBBRRGG" to your mana pool.
Another is "a mechanic which first premiered in a Standard-legal set in the ’00s sees a return to Standard." This could be over a dozen abilities, but what seems most likely is the return of the Hideaway mechanic from 2007's Lorwyn. The Hideaway lands were recently reprinted in a limited-edition Secret Lair set, so it feels like a great opportunity to include that mechanic in another upcoming set.
Several cards will feature some interesting rules text as revealed by Rosewater. One spell reads "Copy target spell you control that wasn’t cast," which seems to cast a very wide net indeed. One assumes there's more to that card than just that single sentence. Graveyard abilities and sacrificing creatures seem to be a running theme in these rules texts, as well as requiring WUBRG to pay for activated abilities and spells.
