While Iron Man has gone toe-to-toe with the Hulk on numerous occasions, the Hulkbuster armor he designed specifically for doing battle with the Strongest Avenger proved it was never really up to the task. Time and again, Iron Man’s Hulkbuster armor failed him when actually fighting the Hulk, with the most devastating example being in the latest Hulk comic series where the Hulk was able to take out four of Iron Man’s Hulkbuster armors at once with little effort. Given how relatively useless his current design has proven to be, it is a shame that Iron Man can never use his greatest ‘Hulkbuster’ armor as it is stuck in a dimension that no longer exists.
Iron Man and the Hulk, along with the entirety of the Avengers and Fantastic Four, had their entire histories rewritten during a ‘90s Marvel Comics reboot known as Heroes Reborn. After all of Earth’s heroes joined together to battle the villainous Onslaught, virtually everyone aside from the X-Men were sent to a pocket dimension known as Counter-Earth where their lives were rebooted and storylines completely changed. Within this alternate reality, Iron Man had an upgraded suit of armor that proved incredibly useful against the Hulk.

In Iron Man #2 by Scott Lobdell, Jim Lee, and Whilce Portacio, Iron Man flies to investigate a gamma explosion that happened in Bruce Banner’s laboratory. Emerging from the glowing green crater in the Earth stood a hulking green behemoth holding the unconscious body of Liz (Betty) Ross. Given Iron Man’s aggressive approach, the Hulk launches a raging attack against the hero, which ends up being a grave mistake as he underestimates the power of Iron Man’s suit.
