Since Bruce Banner was exposed to gamma radiation after saving Rick Jones during a demonstration of the gamma bomb’s power, he gained the superpowered alter ego known as the Hulk and eventually used his strength for good by joining the Avengers. While in the original comic the Hulk got his name after a random pursuing soldier called him a ‘hulk’ based on his physical performance, the Strongest Avenger actually got his iconic moniker from his closest Avengers ally when his origin was rewritten in Marvel Comics’ wildest reboot.
Heroes Reborn was an initiative launched by Marvel Comics in the mid to late ‘90s that gave the publisher the freedom to retool the characters whose comics weren’t selling as well as the X-Men. With X-Men Vol. 2, Age of Apocalypse, and the Onslaught Saga, X-Men sales were thriving in the ‘90s, but the other titles in Marvel’s lineup were not doing as well. So, after Onslaught’s attack in the main continuity, the Avengers, Fantastic Four, and virtually any Marvel character that wasn’t directly associated with the X-Men were thrown into their own pocket dimension known as Counter Earth where they saw a number of changes to their history, including the origin of the Hulk’s name.

In Iron Man Vol. 2 #2 by Scott Lobdell, Jim Lee, and Whilce Portacio, Iron Man comes across a giant green beast who seemingly came out of nowhere during a Stark International event.
