While it has become common knowledge for Marvel Comics fans that the Hulk was created after Bruce Banner was exposed to an explosion of gamma radiation in a chain of events that were seemingly accidental, his origin was slightly changed in Marvel’s weirdest reboot, one which made Hydra the reason behind the Hulk’s existence.
In the mid to late ‘90s, Marvel Comics decided to revamp the Avengers along with basically every one of their characters who weren’t affiliated with the X-Men, an initiative that began with the villain Onslaught who attempted to wipe out humanity and let the mutant race reign supreme. In response, the Avengers and the Fantastic Four stepped up to stop the X-Men villain. During the battle, Onslaught absorbed a number of heroes to grow his own power, including the reality-bending mutant son of Reed Richards, Franklin Richards. Just when all hope seemed lost, the Avengers and the Fantastic Four banded together for one last-ditch effort to beat Onslaught and save humanity. The heroes were successful, but they seemingly vanished once Onslaught was defeated. As was later revealed, Franklin Richards created a pocket dimension known as Counter-Earth where he transported the heroes who would have otherwise died while fighting Onslaught, and on Counter-Earth, the history of these heroes was completely rewritten.
