Marvel finally concludes Christopher Cantwell's first major Iron Man story arc, and it ends with a distressing revelation: Tony Stark is addicted to his armor. Ostensibly, Stark continues iterating and innovating to protect others and to fight bigger threats to the Earth. But Iron Man #19 ventures a new idea: Iron Man continues to create more and more suits of armor because he is addicted to the process, the power, and the need — and Stark himself admits it.
Iron Man's adventures in Cantwell's stories are characterized by Tony's loss of control in his life. He's been stranded on a desolate planet, forced to keep his helmet on thanks to a life-threatening injury, fought Korvac and his Godlike powers (with his own Godlike powers) and granted everyone in New York City his own genius-level intelligence. The last feat nearly destroyed the city — but not before Stark, with the Power Cosmic, killed and subsequently resurrected his friends in a fit of rage. Alone and suffering from severe opiate withdrawal, Tony collapses in Central Park — only to be met by Korvac once again.

In Iron Man #19, written by Cantwell with art by Cafu, Korvac has escaped his prison (even the likes of the Living Tribunal couldn't contain him), and is ready to kill Stark once and for all. Tony eventually convinces Korvac to jettison his Godlike abilities and fight him as a human, but the battle is still woefully lopsided; Korvac is in perfect health while Stark lies dying on the pavement after being physically and emotionally compromised after the previous issue.
