Marvel's mysterious Illuminati is a shadowy organization that causes almost as many problems as they solve — but Iron Man proves the group is absolutely necessary for the safety of Earth. While other superhero teams like the Avengers, the Defender and even the X-Men work in the public eye, the Illuminati are quite clandestine and make difficult decisions that no other group can be seen making. But the events of Thor #25 reveal that the group has another purpose: they keep the dangerous members in the lineup of the Illuminati in line.
Forming in the aftermath of the Kree-Skrull war, the Illuminati were created in 2006 and debuted in the pages of New Avengers. Each of the core members represent a society on Earth: Namor is king of Atlantis, Black Bolt represents the Inhumans, Professor X stands for the mutants, Doctor Strange speaks for the magical community, and the geniuses Reed Richards and Iron Man represent the scientific and government wings of humanity respectively. The only other superhero to decline an invitation was the Black Panther, who believed the group would eventually compromise their morality — and he was correct.

The group would be responsible for, among other things, sending the Hulk into space (resulting in the World War Hulk event), and collecting the Infinity Gems after being warned by the Watcher. But the individual members are just as dangerous as the group — or perhaps more so. In Thor #25, written by Donny Cates with art by Martin Coccolo, Iron Man brazenly ignores orders from Captain America to remain at Avengers Mountain; instead, he takes off into space to fight the rampaging Hulk
