Borderlands 3 is finally getting full crossplay. The game received an update last June where most platforms could play with one another but for one notable exception. PlayStation's networks were excluded from the crossplay update at the request of the publisher, according to a tweet from Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford, which failed to provide an explanation as to why PlayStation didn’t want to let Xbox and PC Vault Hunters join the fun with their PlayStation colleagues.
Documents revealed during the Apple vs Epic trial from last year indicated that 2K might have been reluctant to add PlayStation to its crossplay update because of the revenue sharing Sony demands from publishers in order to enable crossplay. After all, Sony owns the biggest home console system on the market and crossplay only seems to help its competitors. Considering spring is already well sprung, Gearbox’s definition of “later in spring” likely means next month at the very least, or possibly right up to the start of summer in late June. That’d be a full year since crossplay hit every other platform for Borderlands except for PlayStation, and possibly indicating the lengths 2K went to negotiate a better rate from Sony. In any case, better late than never.
