I love puzzle games, especially ones that challenge the player to reorient their perspective to approach an ostensibly two-dimensional world from a three-dimensional point of view. Games likeFezand Monument Valley that dabble in impossible spaces, optical illusions, and deceptively simple mechanics that blossom into a bouquet of mind-melting possibilities.
Looper, a free-to-play puzzle platformer by solo developer FeatureKreep, is just that kind of experience: An unassuming 2D game whose core concept combines the physics-defying possibilities of Portal 2 with the teeth-clenching twitch timing of VVVVVV. It’s short, sweet, and legitimately exciting to play.

Players activate the Looper, which appears over your character’s body in the form of a giant dotted square, by pressing the Space button. With a well-placed loop, players can reach otherwise unreachable areas, collect collectible coins, and activate flagpole checkpoints where you’ll respawn if you die. You can even press the “R” button on your keyboard to manually respawn your character back at your last checkpoint if you get stuck on a particularly difficult puzzle. Not every challenge can be solved by using the Looper, though; you’ll have to bend your brain to figure out which situations necessitate the capabilities of your newfound power and which demand some good ol’ fashioned
