The Price of Ascension - The War Within's Max Level Campaign Reveal
In the most recent chapter of The War Within's max level campaign, we see a reveal about the truth of Ansurek's bargain with Xal'atath, and what it costs the Nerubians.
In the wake of the Earthen's unification during the second chapter of the max level campaign, we're approached by Alleria, who asks that we aid her in a scouting mission in Azj-Kahet. In leiu of joining us, given the precarious nature of her last visit, she sends us to accompany Lilian Voss, one of the members of the Forsaken's Desolate Council and a masterful rogue.
The First Ascended
During our journeys with Lilian in Azj-Kahet, we meet up with Y'tekhi, the quartermaster for our allied Nerubians, the Severed Threads, and a freshly ascended Nerubian. While most undergo the process out of loyalty to the Nerubian's Queen, Ansurek, Y'tekhi infiltrated the ranks of the Queen's most loyal in order to better explore the city for information.
Amidst our search for weaknesses within Ansurek's ranks, we come across the location of a remote lab, housing what is known only as «The First Ascended», but through our further exploration of the city, we come to realize that the chained monstrosity is none other than Queen Neferess, Ansurek's mother.
We first met Ansurek in the animated short 'Threads of Destiny', where the contrast between the former Queen and her now-ruling daughter were put on display via their interactions with Xal'atath. After Ansurek's betrayal, it seems she took it upon herself to inflict further cruelty upon her mother, using her as a test subject for the bargain she made with Xal'atath.

The revelations as to the nature of Ascension do not end there, however. Despite Lilian's wishes, Y'tekhi desire to see their queen freed, and as we aid them with undoing the shackles, Xal'atath arrives with the final piece of the puzzle.
