There have been rumours about a Final Fantasy 9 remake for years now after first appearing in the Nvidia leak way back in 2021, but even three years later, Square Enix hasn't confirmed that it's in development. However, prominent leaker Midori claims that it's still underway, corroborating Jeff Grubb's comments from last year.
As reported by My Nintendo News, when asked if the FF9 remake is real, Midori simply replied, "This is correct information." We don't know much about it right now, such as whether it'll be closer to the Final Fantasy 7 trilogy or something like Live a Live, but Naoki Yoshida might've been teasing it earlier this year.
"You may have noticed a lot of Final Fantasy 9 references here," Yoshida said of the Final Fantasy 14 Dawntrail Collector's Edition (thanks, IGN). "But the reason is a secret."
Last year, a prominent leaker on ResetEra called I'm A Hero Too claimed that Final Fantasy 10 would be getting a remake in 2026 to coincide with the game's 25th anniversary. However, Midori claims otherwise.
One Twitter follower asked, "Are there any remakes from Square Enix in the works?" to which Midori said, "Yes. But there is not a [Final Fantasy 10] remake title in development."
There is not a [Final Fantasy 10] remake title in development.
We've still got the third part of the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy to come, so with the Final Fantasy 9 remake on top, it'll be a while before other entries in the series get their turn.
Fans are clamouring for a bunch of different entries. One of the popular picks is Final Fantasy 8 (whose director even commented on the idea, saying that they would overhaul the combat system), but there are plenty of fans calling for FF6 and earlier games as well.
Considered one of the greatest RPGs on the original PlayStation, Final Fantasy 9 follows Zidane's journey - from kidnapping a princess to the escalating war that follows.
