Sony announced a remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic three years ago during the 2021 PlayStation Showcase. Since then, the trailer was delisted, it was indefinitely delayed, and it changed developers. Fears of it being cancelled have been mounting as both Disney and Embracer remain quiet, but developer Saber Interactive insists that it's still in the works and only yesterday revealed that the project is "alive and well".
Speaking to IGN, CEO Matthew Karch said, "It's clear and it's obvious that we're working on this. It's been in the press numerous times. What I will say is that the game is alive and well, and we're dedicated to making sure we exceed consumer expectations."
While it was announced in 2021, the remake has actually been in development for six years now, but we've yet to see anything of the game aside from a pre-rendered shot of Revan. Embracer CEO Lars Wingefors said in an investor call that there's still "some time left" until it'll be ready, so the wait continues.
As far back as 2022, Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier said that expecting the game to launch in 2024 is "wishful thinking", so it's increasingly unlikely to launch this year.
It was even assumed to be dead last year due to the lack of updates and worrying reports, but two people from Saber reportedly told Schreier in December that the game is still in development. However, he couldn't comment on whether it will actually be released.
Another reporter, Jeff Grubb, added that the game is "very unlikely to happen without a partner like Sony. And Sony seems to want nothing to do with it now." He also said that Lucasfilm "doesn't want to [fund it] and probably wouldn't". Hopefully, we'll hear more concrete details soon.
