How to Get Shadowmourne Guide
Shadowmourne, a Legendary two-handed axe, is obtained by completing a long quest chain within the Icecrown Citadel raid. This guide will walk you through the quest chain, highlighting items you need to gather or farm to create it to earn the axe, as well as the Feat of Strength achievement, Shadowmourne. By completing the quest chain, you'll also receive a number of other items related to Arthas, including the Reins of the Crimson Deathcharger and Jaina's Locket!
Changes in obtaining Shadowmourne in Wrath Classic Patch 3.4.3
In the Patch Notes for Patch 3.4.3 Phase 4 «Fall of the Lich King», Blizzard explains what changes are being made to Shadowfrost Shard acquisition, which will allow more players to enjoy the weapon. An excerpt is below from the Patch Notes --

Shadowmourne Legendary QuestTo allow Shadowmourne to be enjoyed by many players, several adjustments and improvements have been made:
- Shadowfrost Shards do not require that a player in your raid group has advanced to the quest “The Splintered Throne” in order to drop.
- The drop rate of Shadowfrost Shards on 25-player normal have been adjusted to match the drop rates of 25-player heroic.
- The end boss of each wing (Saurfang, Lana’thel, Putricide, Sindragosa, and The Lich King) will now always drop a single guaranteed Shadowfrost Shard on both 25-player Normal and Heroic difficulties.
