Before the release of Baldur's Gate 3, it was widely accepted that CRPGs were more of a niche genre that only attracted a rather dedicated audience. Games like Divinity: Original Sin 2 and the Pillars of Eternity series are some of the most loved and highly-rated RPGs of all time, but they were made with fairly minimal budgets due to their low expected sales. In fact, both Pillars of Eternity games were crowdfunded, meaning that developer Obsidian didn't have too much cash to work with.
Now that Baldur's Gate 3 has propelled the genre to new heights, and had a whopping budget to go alongside it, people are starting to give CRPGs the respect they've deserved for a while. It's also prompted fans of other CRPGs, such as the previously mentioned Pillars of Eternity series, to ask developers whether there's any renewed interest in returning to them now that Baldur's Gate 3 has paved the way. For Obsidian's legendary RPG creator Josh Sawyer, the answer is a resounding yes.

Speaking in an interview with Touch Arcade, Sawyer is asked what projects he'd like to return to for a potential sequel. He states that while he wouldn't touch more recent titles like Pentiment, he would like to go back and potentially work on a third Pillars of Eternity game. Before all you fans of the series throw up your arms in celebration, there is one catch. Sawyer states that while he'd like to, he'd only do so if he had a similar sized budget to what was used to make Baldur's Gate 3.
