Helldivers 2 has been a huge success for developer Arrowhead Game Studios, skyrocketing to the top of the Steam and PlayStation charts. Yesterday, it even dethroned Grand Theft Auto 5, reaching an all-time player peak of nearly half a million players.
That makes it the 24th most-played Steam game ever. It has beaten not only GTA 5, but Skyrim, Halo Infinite, No Man's Sky, and Starfield as well. Impressive as it is, its peak is still rapidly climbing. In just 24 hours, it jumped from 366,000 to 409,000. As for right now, it's the sixth most played game on Steam, and it was second last night.
For comparison, the first Helldivers has an all-time player peak of 6,691, just 1.6 percent of its sequel. However, it saw a huge spike last month in players thanks to the second game, reaching as high as 3,251.
Helldivers 2's success isn't going as well as the fight against arachnids, however. The unexpected influx of players is placing a huge strain on servers, causing progression bugs and capacity issues . Arrowhead is working to deploy a fix "as soon as possible", but the peak has only continued to rise in the face of these issues.
Not only is Helldivers 2 shooting up the Steam charts, beating out heavy hitters left and right, but it's also number one on the PlayStation Store. That means it's currently ahead of Fortnite and Call of Duty.
Because of the server issues caused by its enormous success, Helldivers 2's review score on Steam is dropping. It now sits at a seven out of ten, despite being "Mostly Positive" overall.
Many of these "Not Recommended" scores cite the long queues and inability to get into games. "This review is at capacity," one user wrote. "Please try again later."
"Great game," another said. "Wish I could play it. Can't give a good review so far. Seven hours of playtime and six of those have been waiting in the menu to connect."
