While attention turns to ’s upcoming DLC, a detail hiding in plain sight in the base game may have already revealed an important part of ’s lore. is full of hidden lore, but it can sometimes be difficult to recognize the full significance of the information scattered across The Lands Between. This can, and apparently has, led to some notable facts effectively blending in with more generic flavor text.
It is impossible to underestimate the sheer breadth of information available in to those willing to seek it out. With a large part of the game’s lore famously written by George R.R. Martin, author of, it is perhaps unsurprising just how densely packed the game is, regardless of its setting’s desolate appearance. Moreover, it seems that this may even extend to aspects of the DLC’s own plot, despite the years of extra development time needed to bring it into being.
As noted by Reddit user cudakid210 (via ), one seemingly-normal shield could provide the name of a brand-new faction to be featured in. The Candletree Wooden Shield bears the emblem of what appears to be a combination of candelabra and tree, and its description reveals that the design is forbidden. This is because the symbol is believed to an ominous phrase which has until now nevertheless gone largely unremarked on. However, with ’s director hinting at an undiscovered secret, this simple shield’s story may actually be something remarkably complex.
When examined in detail, it quickly becomes clear that candles and candelabras are a recurring theme in. Candles appear in great numbers around the mysterious Messmer the Impaler in the DLC’s trailer, and several other examples can be seen throughout. The Candletree symbol can be seen referenced by an enemy wielding a golden candelabra, for example. As a result,it seems likely that the Candletree is the symbol of a new faction debuting in the DLC, which may well have Messmer and Miquella occupying prominent positions within it.
