The new trailer featuring Paul Mescal and Pedro Pascal made a huge splash at the CineEurope trade show. It was the highlight of Paramount’s presentation in Barcelona, building anticipation for the long-awaited sequel to Ridley Scott’s iconic original film.
Despite the uncertainty around Paramount’s future ownership, the studio put up a strong show at CineEurope, wowing its attendees with never-seen-before footage of Gladiator 2, featuring Paul Mescal in the lead alongside Pedro Pascal.
Per Variety, people attending CinemaCon in the United States got their first look at Gladiator 2 earlier this year. But Paramount showcased entirely new footage at CineEurope alongside a trailer, which hasn’t been released online either. Ridley Scott promised that despite the 25-year gap between the first film and the sequel, Gladiator 2 will be “well worth the wait.”
In Paramount’s exclusively created video for CineEurope, the studio expressed its eagerness for Gladiator 2 by having multiple execs outfitted in costumes of gladiators and Romans. The video played before Paramount’s presentation began, with the studio’s president of international theatrical distribution, Mark Viane, jokingly enacting scenes from the original Gladiator along with his teammates at a golf course.
Later during the presentation, Viane even teased that some of the “biggest action sequences ever put on film” will be a part of Ridley Scott’s upcoming sequel.
Based on a script penned by David Scarpa, Gladiator 2 also stars Denzel Washington, Connie Nielson, Joseph Quinn, and Djimon Hounsou alongside Mescal and Pascal. Other cast members involved are Fred Hechinger, May Calamawy, Derek Jacobi, Lior Raz, Peter Mensah, Matt Lucas, and Tim McInnerny.
Following its challenging production schedule that came to a halt due to the SAG-AFTRA strike in 2023, Gladiator 2 wrapped on January 17, 2024. It is set to hit theaters in the US on November 22.
