Bottoms star Havana Rose Liu has officially been tapped to join the cast for director John Carney’s newest musical comedy movie, which is now currently in production in Dublin, Ireland.
“The film is an uplifting, music-driven story about a wedding singer (Rudd), a rock star (Jonas), and the song that comes between them,” reads the logline.
Liu first gained recognition for her leading performance in 20th Century Studios’ suspense thriller No Exit. She was most recently seen in the R-rated comedy Bottoms, which was led by Rachel Sennott and Ayo Edebiri. Besides starring in Power Ballad, Liu will next be seen in the horror film They Listen with John Cho, and in the Christams comedy Oh. What. Fun with Michelle Pfeiffer.
Liu will be joining previously announced cast members Paul Rudd (Ant-Man), Nick Jonas (Welcome to Jumanji), and Jack Reynor (Sing Street). Further details about their respective characters remained under wraps. Currently, the film still doesn’t have a target release date attached to it yet.
Power Ballad is being directed and produced by Carney from a screenplay he co-wrote with Peter McDonald. The project is produced by Anthony Bregman and Peter Cron for for Likely Story, alongside Robert Walpole and Rebecca O’Flanagan for Treasure Entertainment. 30WEST is fully financing the movie, with WME Independent handling the sales to its international rights and UTA Independent Film Group handling its domestic sales.
