Diablo Cody is producing an adaptation of, a popular Webtoon comic created by Violet Karim.
Per Variety, Cody has been tapped to produce an upcoming adaptation of Death of a Pop Star. The movie’s script is written by Isa Mazzei, who previously penned 2018’s CAM and was a producer on 2022’s How to Blow Up a Pipeline.
“[It] tells supernatural story of Sophie, a beloved pop star at the top of her game — until she takes a tumble from the top of the stairs and wakes up in Hell,” Variety’s description reads. “Lucky for her, the Grim Reaper is her number one fan and, in a desperate attempt to save his idol, secretly gives Sophie a second chance at life back on Earth. But with Sophie’s resurrection comes a deadly target on her back when she’s threatened with being dragged back to Hell.”
Cody is known for writing films such as 2007’s Juno, 2009’s Jennifer’s Body, 2011’s Young Adult, 2015’s Ricki and the Flash, 2018’s Tully, and 2024’s Lisa Frankenstein. She was also an uncredited writer on 2013’s Evil Dead and directed 2013’s Paradise.
“As a huge fan of both pop music and the undead, I am so excited to help bring this offbeat story to the screen,” Cody said of Death of a Pop Star.
Cody is also producing the film alongside Mason Novick. Wattpad Webtoon Studios’ Aron Levitz, David Madden, and Jason Goldberg serve as executive producers.
“Death of a Pop Star is one of those titles that just lends itself so perfectly to a live-action adaptation,” said Levitz. “Violet created such a mesmerizing, must-read story, and when it came to choosing a partner to help us bridge the gap between the living and the dead, who else does that better than Diablo Cody?”
