has cast Christian Slater, Patrick Gibson, and more in leading roles.
Per Deadline, Gibson (Shadow and Bone) will play a young Dexter Morgan in the upcoming prequel series, which is set in the early 1990s. Slater will play Dexter’s father, Harry Morgan, while Molly Brown (Senior Year) has been tapped to play Dexter’s sister, Debra Morgan.
Originally titled Dexter: Origins, Original Sin comes from showrunner Clyde Phillips.
“Dexter: Original Sin follows Dexter (Gibson) in 1991 Miami, as a student transitioning into a serial killer in training,” Deadline’s description reads. “When his bloodthirsty urges can no longer be ignored, Dexter finds solace and understanding in Harry. As his only confidant, he teaches Dexter a Code that’s designed to help him find and kill people who deserve to die—all while avoiding getting caught by law enforcement. This is a particular challenge for young Dexter as he begins a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department.”
Phillips also serves as an executive producer on Dexter: Original Sin alongside Scott Reynolds, Michael C. Hall, Mary Leah Sutton, Tony Hernandez, and Lilly Burns. Robert Lloyd Lewis serves as a producer, while Michael Lehmann is a directing executive producer.
Dexter was initially played by Hall in the eight-season Showtime series that premiered in 2006. His father was played by James Remar in the original series, while Jennifer Carpenter portrayed Debra. The series also starred Julie Benz as Rita Bennett, Erik King as James Doakes, Lauren Vélez as María LaGuerta, and David Zayas as Angel Batista.
Following the conclusion of the original series, Hall and Carpenter reprised their roles in a continuation titled Dexter: New Blood, which premiered in November 2023.
Originally announced in February 2023 and produced by Showtime Studios and Counterpart Studios, Dexter: Original Sin does not yet have a premiere date.
