Microsoft starts rolling out Windows 11's biggest update for 2023 today. The Copilot artificial intelligence sidebar gets top billing, but there’s plenty more to pore over in the release.
Microsoft has announced more than 150 improvements in the Windows 11 2023 Update (Version 23H2), including AI-powered features for some built-in apps and design refreshes to align these apps with the overall style of Windows 11, plus some under-the-hood capabilities.
This update also fixes several highly specific issues, like changing the spelling of the capital of Ukraine from Kiev to Kyiv and adjusting for the new daylight saving time in Greenland.
One point that will make cranky Windows users less cranky is that the update should be quicker to install than the major updates of yore, since Microsoft will use the same servicing model that delivers monthly updates through Windows Update. It also says "you don't need to worry about application or device compatibility between the versions.”
Not everything in this update is a showstopper, but here are 12 things that are worth noting.
The addition of Windows Copilot is the most significant change to this new version of Windows 11, heralding the age of generative AI in desktop operating systems.
Copilot has been available via Microsoft's developer tools for a few months now, but this update extends it to all Windows users. It's still technically in preview, and the Windows Copilot sidebar can’t yet control everything on the computer. For example, it can’t open apps unless they’re from the Microsoft Store.
