Based on the namesake Japanese manga series written by Muneyuki Kaneshiro and illustrated by Yusuke Nomura, (stylized as BLUELOCK) is a sports anime TV show about soccer. The plot revolves around Yoichi Isagi, a high school soccer player, as he competes against other equally ambitious young individuals to be the world’s greatest egotist striker. The program Isagi and the rest are part of has been set up by the Japan Football Association after the national team’s humiliating 16th-position finish in the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

In March 2023, it was announced that Blue Lock had been greenlit for season 2. The announcement was made through a teaser that appeared right after season 1 finished airing. The same teaser also revealed that an anime film, titled BLUELOCK: Episode Nagi, based on the Episode Nagi spin-off manga, was in production. In November 2023, a trailer for the film was released, revealing April 19, 2024, as its release date.
Anime production is an arduous process and generally takes much longer than live-action projects. Eight Bit, the animation studio behind Blue Lock, has also developed multi-seasonal anime such as That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, which had an intermediate period of little over two years between the releases of seasons 1 and 2. As for Blue Lock, its inaugural season went into development in August 2021 and premiered in October 2022. Given these precedences, it can be speculated that Blue Lock Season 2 can come out in the second half of 2024 at the earliest.
