Baldur's Gate 3's latest hotfix addresses a bug that was causing Gale to disappear from the game permanently. This comes after players would go to the camp chest to get a magical item for the wizard to snack on, only for him to leave the party forever the second they turned their back.
Now, Gale should work as intended, and not run away to blow up somewhere unless you're making him wait days for his next magical item - or you refuse to hand over any entirely. This won't help you if an impatient Gale already ran away 30 seconds after you asked him to wait while you grabbed him a snack, but it will keep him around on any future playthroughs.
"Poor Gale - we know your pain, sometimes it’s easy to read something into a situation that wasn’t there," read the latest hotfix notes. "We’ve sat him down and explained that if someone doesn’t offer him a shoe to eat every time, that doesn’t mean they never will. You’ll find him more likely to stick around now."
Jokes aside, this fix should put an end to a bug that triggered if you exited the menu to give him a magical item, either accidentally or so you could pop back to camp to pick something up for him. Now, he should work as intended, and only leave if you're neglecting the orb issue or dismissing it completely.

Some are misinterpreting this as a change to Gale's writing, making him less concerned about the bomb in his chest. This is not the case. The wording of the patch notes might make light of the situation, but it is just a joke. This is a purely technical fix for a scripting issue that many players had complained about, since you are supposed to be given a fair amount of time to find items for him if you've agreed to help. He'll still leave if you wait too long or if you indicate that
