BAFTA has announced the nominations for the 2024 BAFTA Games Awards — and Baldur’s Gate 3 leads the pack.
Larian’s sprawling Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game is up for 10 BAFTA Games Awards, including Best Game. Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has a strong showing with nine nominations, Remedy’s Alan Wake 2 has eight, and Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Respawn’s Star Wars Jedi: Survivor have six each.
Outside the triple-A space, MintRocket's marine adventure Dave The Diver and Tango Gameworks' rhythm action game Hi-Fi Rush have five nominations each, with Cocoon, Dredge, and Viewfinder four apiece.
11 out of the 12 nominees in the performance categories receive their first BAFTA nomination, including Sam Lake for Alan Wake 2; Amelia Tyler, Andrew Wincott, Neil Newbon, Samantha Béart (a 2023 BAFTA Breakthrough) and Tracey Wiles for Baldur’s Gate 3; Ralph Ineson for Final Fantasy 14; Cameron Monaghan and Debra Wilson for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor; and Tony Todd and Yuri Lowenthal for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.
Speaking to IGN, Emma Baehr, Executive Director of Awards & Content at BAFTA, and Tara Saunders, Chair of the BAFTA Games Board of Trustees, said the BAFTA Games Awards are now more important than ever, given the mass layoffs and studio closures that have blighted the video game industry in recent times.
“People are clearly going through a really difficult time right now, and I'm sure some of today's nominees will be amongst them,” Saunders said. “Creativity will always exist and shine through and it's BAFTA’s job to showcase and make sure that we make a celebration of that. It's even more important when things are hard actually, that you make a celebration of that, you make sure that actually the developers are recognized. What it does also is just showcase to the next future generation that actually, regardless of difficult times, great content will get made and showcased and celebrated.”
