The announcement of 's second set, titled and themed, has left some confusion surrounding what exactly a Floodborn is and how it is different from the other glimmer varieties of character cards: Dreamborn and Storyborn. Disney's trading card game has had a chaotic beginning with its cards from sets proving extremely difficult to come by; however, it is fun, simple to learn, and, of course, features many of the popular characters of the Disney universe. The story behind the game will slowly continue to be told through each consecutive set that will be released quarterly, the second of which is coming this holiday season.
's second set will be released in December 2023 and continues giving more context to the narrative that was introduced with. In this story, players called Illumineers are able to use special magical ink to summon glimmers, which are temporary versions of familiar characters from the world of Disney. Using this power that was given to Illumineers by the Great Illuminary, players are able to call upon these glimmer characters to their side as they work to solve the mystery of what happened to the previous Illumineers who disappeared and what has happened to the lore of Lorcana.

's concept of these character cards being glimmers rather than the original characters is important to understanding the three differing classifications of Floodborn, Dreamborn, and Storyborn.
