Valve is rolling out an OLED Steam Deck
Games giant Valve will be releasing a new version of its Steam Deck hardware in the very near future.
The company is rolling out a new iteration of the tech that comes with a larger OLED display that is capable of outputting HDR. It also boasts a longer battery life, improved cooling and more storage capacity in addition to faster Wi-Fi. This new hardware will be launching on November 16th.
The original Steam Deck is being discontinued, save for the 256GB which is being kept on as an entry-level model.
Speaking to Eurogamer, Valve said that the tech to make what the company would call a proper second iteration of the Steam Deck doesn't exist yet.
"Obviously we'd love to get even more performance in the same power envelope, but that technology doesn't exist yet," hardware engineer Yazan Aldehayyat said.
"That's what I think we'd call a Steam Deck 2.0.
"The first Steam Deck was the first moment in time where we felt like there was enough GPU performance in a portable form factor that lets you play all your Steam games. We would love for the trend of perf-per-watt to progress rapidly to do that, but it's not quite there yet."
Steam Deck was released in February 2022.
