Games giant Valve has revealed its plan to stop bots and resellers from dominating sales of its upcoming Steam OLED.
In a thread on Twitter, the company said that it had certain criteria that needed to be met for someone to buy the Limited Edition version of its brand-new hardware. The Steam Deck OLED goes on sale today (Thursday, November 16th).
In order to by this tech, customers need to be in the United States or Canada, have a Steam account "in good standing" – presumably meaning there's no suspicious activity associated with it – and said account needs to have made a purchase on Steam before November 2023. Valve is limiting sales of the Steam Deck OLED Limited Edition to one per account, too.
The company says that this special Steam Deck is a trial and that it might be doing more limited colours at some point.
"We see the Limited Edition model as an experiment (both in terms of learning how to pull it off, as well as gauging customer demand)," Valve wrote.
"We’re hopeful that people are excited about this release, and if we see high demand it will give us confidence to do more colourways in the future."
