Star Wars Outlaws creative director Julian Gerighty has revealed fresh details about Ubisoft‘s recently announced open-world game.
In an interview with the latest issue of Edge (via GamesRadar), he discussed the size of the in-game planets and how the title’s protagonist was influenced by Han Solo.
“It’s a crude analogy, but the size of one planet might be about [equivalent to] two of the zones in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey,” Gerighty said.
“It could be two to three zones. But it’s not, you know, this sort of epic ‘the whole of England recreated’ approach,” he clarified, adding that the planets in Outlaws will be “manageable in size for both the player and developer at Ubisoft Massive.”
Gerighty also reportedly said all planets and locations are being “handcrafted,” meaning “we haven’t procedurally generated an entire planet.”
Set between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, the game stars outlaw protagonist Kay Vest.
“When you think of a scoundrel, your mind goes to Han Solo, it goes to Lando, it goes to Indiana Jones, to James Bond, to Captain Jack Sparrow,” Gerighty said.
“It was the fantasy I connected with the most in the original [Star Wars] trilogy – as a kid, I was a much, much bigger fan of Han Solo and Chewbacca than any of the others.”
However, Massive wanted its protagonist to be “a little bit more relatable” than Harrison Ford’s character. “More of a rookie, a petty thief, who ends up in a situation that’s much bigger than they ever expected,” Gerighty explained.
Announced in June, Star Wars Outlaws is scheduled for release in 2024 for Xbox Series X/S, PS5 and PC through Ubisoft Connect.
