After another weekend in theaters, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is now nearing another box office milestone. The movie earned $58.2 million in North America and $70.7 million from international markets this weekend to boost its worldwide haul to $872 million.
The movie should reach $900 million this week and $1 billion relatively soon. The animated film from the makers of Minions and Despicable Me still has another major market to come, Nintendo's home country of Japan, where it releases on April 28.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is 2023's biggest movie so far globally. In North America, the movie has now earned more than $400 million; it needed 18 days to reach that mark. That's the second fastest run to $400 million stateside ever for an animated movie, only trailing The Incredibles 2, which reached $400 million in North America after 15 days, according to Deadline.
In terms of box office numbers by region, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is seeing a pretty even split. It's earned $434.3 million domestically and $437.5 million from international markets. That's 49.8% for North America and $50.2% for international.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is Universal's third highest-grossing movie of all time in North America--animated or not--trailing only Jurassic World ($653.4 million) and E.T. ($437.1 million) from all the way back in 1982. (That figure is not adjusted for inflation, however).
In case there was any doubt, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is now far and away the highest-grossing video game movie of all time. Check out the gallery below to see the top 10.
