Devolver Digital and developers All Possible Futures wound up creating what is arguably one of this year’s most anticipated indie titles when the revealed The Plucky Squire last year, giving us all out first glimpse at an adventure with a unique hybrid of 2D and 3D gameplay. And now the game has resurfaced during today’s PlayStation Showcase, providing us with a new gameplay trailer to enjoy. It is a bit light on any new information, but hey, any excuse to see more of this promising game is welcome.
The new clip does gives us a quick introduction to Violet, Thrash, and Pip, the friends of our protagonist Jot, who join them throughout their literal storybook adventure on a journey to defeat the evil sorcerer Humgrump. To stop him sand save their world of pure creativity that is Mojo, that means venturing beyond the storybook and into the world of a child’s desk, filled with new threats such as insects to fight and new areas such as dollhouses, toy castles, or even coffee mugs to explore, as seen in the trailer below. We also get a look at what appear to be some moments where the game shifts into a few different genres such as 2D side-scrolling platforming, turn-based RPG battles, and more, venturing well beyond it’s Zelda inspirations.
The Plucky Squire is certainly shaping up to a unique, wholesome, and just plain fun adventure, and while we don’t have a release date yet (as some of us may have hoped for), the game is still set for a release later this year across all major platforms, and we’ll be waiting with as much glee for this childhood adventure as possible until then.
