During our adventures against the kobyss in Hallowfall, players encounter a surprisingly new companion — a talking fish!
Dropped by one of the many kobyss attackers on Hallowfall's northern shores, we start our adventure as we have many times before: by listening to the convincing voice of a talking animal, for some reason.
As thanks for our aid, the Peculiar Fish offers help in return, guiding us in the direction of nearby baubles and shrines of the kobyss, to better understand them — and how to defeat them.
As we inspect the kobyss shrines, we're given insight into their beliefs by our Fish friend through rather ominous phrases.
One has to wonder if these are prophecies of some kind, but the player doesn't have time for that, and instead continues their quest to gather the crystal baubles from kobyss corpses in the area.
Once our collection is complete, we bring the baubles back to the Peculiar Fish, who forms them into a charm that allows us to use the kobyss' magic against them to assassinate their leaders.
Like most challenges of combat, this proves a swift task for the player, and we return to the Peculiar Fish with news of our victory.
Pleased with our actions, the Fish sees a lesson dolled out to the kobyss, but likewise sees our time as companions as coming to an end. Scooping the Fish up from the water once more, we take it to the northernmost reaches of Hallowfall's cavern to return the fish to its home in the deeps.
As we deposit our new fishy friend back into the water, it sheds the illusion around itself, revealing its true form as a fledgling Leviathan.
Another much larger member of its kind appears in the depths, and after offering us words of warning and kindness alike, it departs back into the lightless depths of the sunless sea.
Like many things in Hallowfall, the nature of the cavern in which Beledar resides is an ever-growing mystery.
