Universal is reportedly developing a movie with Illumination.
The Japanese action-adventure video game has been considered one of Nintendo’s most successful franchises. It follows various incarnations of Link, a brave young man of the elf-like Hylian race, and Princess Zelda, a magical princess who is the mortal reincarnation of the goddess Hylia, as they fight to save the magical land of Hyrule from Ganon, an evil warlord turned demon king.
On The Hot Mic with Jeff Sneider and John Rocha, Sneider revealed that Universal is reportedly closing “a big deal” with Nintendo and Illumination to make a The Legend of Zelda movie. This comes off the success of their previous collaboration on The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which became the highest-grossing video game of all time.
As a result of the previous success, Sneider notes that it is costing Universal “a pretty penny” as “Nintendo knows its worth at this point.”
As the film is in its very early stages, there is no current release date. Fans of the video game will likely have to wait a few years before they can see their favorite game characters on the big screen.
