Devolver Digital has announced that Return to Monkey Island will be coming out for iOS and Android on 27th July. Pre-registration is now open across their respective app stores.
Originally released last year, Return to Monkey Island is a modern sequel to and a grand old return of the legendary point & click adventure series, created by two of the minds behind the original game – Ron Gilbert and Dave Grossman. This adventure slots into the series’ overarching narrative right where this pair of creators left off, after Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge, effectively ignoring all of the events and (most of) the new characters that came after they moved on from LucasArts.
With a distinctive new art style by Rex Crowle, it’s a game that straddles the divide between the new and old, leaning into the nostalgia, but featuring some more modern gameplay ideas as well.
If you’re a point & click fan, then it’s practically essential to play. In our Return to Monkey Island review, Nic said, “With all the wit and charm that you would expect from Gilbert and Grossman’s writing, Return to Monkey Island is a decades-long reverie made reality and absolutely essential for fans of the series.”
Return to Monkey Island originally released on Nintendo Switch, Mac and PC in September of last year, with a Linux port cropping up a month later, and the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S release a month after that. Now, as it comes to mobile, it will have a shot at reaching even more of the millions of fans of the early 90s originals.
