Nintendo has announced the release date for Wave 5 of the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – Booster Course Pass. The bundle of tracks and new characters will launch next week on 12th July, both for standalone purchase and for Nintendo Switch Online – Expansion Pack subscribers.
As with every wave in the Booster Course Pass, Wave 5 includes two cups, each with four tracks. There’s another healthy spread circuits from across the history of the series, with three of the still odd real world circuits from Mario Kart Tour, two from Mario Kart Wii and one apiece from Mario Kart: Double Dash on GameCube and Mario Kart Super Circuit on the GBA.
There’s also one brand new circuit, Squeaky Clean Sprint, which sets a race in an oversized bathroom, giving off some real Micro Machines vibes in the process.
You’ll also be able to take to the track as three additional characters, with Nintendo drawing from the wider Mario universe to include Kamek, Wiggler, and Petey Piranha.
This will be the fifth of six waves of DLC, with the pass adding a whopping 48 courses to the game, and putting rumours of Mario Kart 9’s development to one side (for now). Each wave features eight tracks in two cups with the release schedule spreading them out across 2022 and 2023. It’s a wealth of new tracks to race, costing £22.49 / €24.99 to purchase. However, if you subscribe to Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack, then it is bundled in with your sub. That’s quite a sweetener to join the higher tier when you’ll need Switch Online in order to play these tracks online anyway!
There’s just one more wave to go now, which is expected for release in a few months from now. What classic circuits can Nintendo include that they haven’t already? Maybe it’ll just be wall-to-wall
